Frustration Boils Over for White Sox: Sizemore, Benintendi Ejected While Down 9-0 to Orioles
Tensions High as Sox Lose Fourth Straight
The Chicago White Sox's frustrating season hit a new low on Wednesday night as they were routed 9-0 by the Baltimore Orioles. The loss extended their losing streak to four games and dropped their record to 49-72.
Adding to the frustration were two ejections in the seventh inning. First, designated hitter AJ Sizemore was tossed after arguing a called third strike. Then, left fielder Andrew Benintendi was ejected for throwing his helmet and arguing with the umpire.
Sizemore's Ejection
With the White Sox down 5-0, Sizemore came to the plate with two outs and a runner on first. He took a called third strike on a pitch that appeared to be outside the zone. Sizemore immediately began arguing with home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak, who ejected him after a brief discussion.
Benintendi's Ejection
Two batters later, Benintendi came to the plate and also took a called third strike. He slammed his helmet to the ground in frustration and began arguing with Rehak. The umpire quickly ejected him as well.
Both Sizemore and Benintendi have been key contributors to the White Sox this season. Sizemore is batting .282 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs, while Benintendi is batting .307 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs.
Frustration Boils Over
The ejections were a clear sign of the frustration that has been building within the White Sox clubhouse. The team has now lost 12 of its last 14 games and is in danger of missing the playoffs for the second straight season.
Manager Tony La Russa said after the game that he understood the frustration of his players, but he also said that they need to keep their emotions in check.
"I get it," La Russa said. "They're frustrated. But we can't let our emotions get the best of us. We need to stay focused and keep playing hard.
Looking Ahead
The White Sox will have a chance to snap their losing streak on Thursday night when they face the Orioles again at Camden Yards. Right-hander Lance Lynn will start for the White Sox, while left-hander Dean Kremer will start for the Orioles.
