Increase in Outbound Containers Contributes to Overall Growth
Traffic at Ports Overseen by Mawani Surges in 2023
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has announced a surge in container handling volumes across trade hubs under its supervision. Data released for 2023 indicates an impressive 12% increase, with a total of 84 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled during the year.
The increase was driven by a significant 35% growth in outbound containers. According to Mawani, the number of outbound containers handled in 2023 reached 2,586,722 TEUs, reflecting a 15.56% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in exports contributed to the overall container volume growth.
Mawani also reported a decrease in container handling in July 2023. The number of containers handled during the month dropped to 645,020 TEUs, a decline compared to the previous month. However, this was offset by the strong performance in other months.
