Early Life and Education

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.

Political Career

Whitmer's political career began in 2000 when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She served in the State House until 2006, when she won election to the Michigan State Senate. In the Senate, Whitmer rose to become the Minority Leader.
