Charles II Restored to the Throne
Background
Charles II was born on May 29, 1630, at St James's Palace. He was the son of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France. On January 1, 1651, Charles II was crowned at Scone as King of Scotland. This was the last such coronation at Scone.
Reign
In 1660, Charles II was restored to the throne after the overthrow of the Commonwealth. His reign is known for the restoration of the monarchy and the establishment of the Church of England as the official religion. Charles II died on February 6, 1685, at the age of 54.
